Chapter 2 - The Evidence of MaliceRecovery was a slow, agonizing crawl. I spent two weeks in the hospital, and every night, I played the scene at the lake over and over again in my mind. The way Thomas had hesitated before grabbing her. The way his hand had been so close to mine.

I wasn't just a grieving mother anymore; I was a woman who had been murdered in spirit.

One afternoon, a man entered my room—the stranger who had pulled me from the water. His name was Elias. He was a retired private investigator who lived near the dock. He didn't come to comfort me; he came to give me a flash drive.

"I saw it all, Lydia," Elias said, his voice grave. "From my porch. I didn't see you guys 'talking.' I saw a struggle. I saw Thomas pushing you toward the thinner ice before he 'slipped' and fell in with her."

My blood turned to ice. "He pushed me?"

"He tried to make it look like an accident," Elias confirmed. "I have a drone that was capturing footage of the storm for a weather project. I have the video, Lydia. It shows Thomas shoving you under."

I stared at the flash drive. It was my daughter’s justice. It was my husband’s execution.

"Why are you helping me?" I asked.

"Because my daughter was killed by a drunk driver three years ago," Elias said, his eyes filled with a hard, unwavering light. "And the man who did it walked free because he had money. Thomas Caruso has money. But he doesn't have the truth on his side."
