Chapter 5 - The ReckoningThe trial was a circus. Sloane turned on Thomas within forty-eight hours, trying to cut a deal to save her own skin. She painted him as the mastermind, the cold-blooded husband who had groomed her and used her.

Thomas, in turn, tried to claim I had been depressed and had jumped into the water myself, forcing him to intervene.

But the video was absolute.

The courtroom went silent as the drone footage played on the large screens. There was no ambiguity. There was no "accidental slip." There was Thomas, deliberately guiding me to the weakest spot on the lake, his hand clearly shoving my shoulder downward as the ice gave way.

When the jury returned after only three hours, the verdict was unanimous. Guilty on all counts: attempted murder, conspiracy to commit fraud, and the wrongful death of our unborn child.

As Thomas was led away in handcuffs, his eyes met mine one last time. There was no apology in them. Just a hollow, desperate fear—the same fear I had felt beneath the ice.
