Chapter 3 - The Web of DeceptionI checked myself out of the hospital earlier than recommended. I returned to our home—a mausoleum of memories I couldn't bear to touch. I began to dig into Thomas’s finances. If he had tried to kill me, there had to be a motive.

I found it in a hidden safe behind the drywall in his study. Life insurance. A policy he had secretly doubled only a month before the "accident." And it wasn't just life insurance; it was a series of corporate emails between Thomas and Sloane. They weren't just lovers; they were business partners in a shell company that was currently being investigated for massive embezzlement from my father’s estate.

If I died, Thomas would inherit everything. My father’s land, my family’s trust, and the insurance money. He wasn't just trying to be with Sloane; he was trying to liquidate my existence to cover his mounting debts.

I began to play a dangerous game. I acted the part of the grieving, broken wife. I let Thomas come back to the house, let him think I was so shattered I didn't know what was happening.

"I'm sorry, Lydia," he would say, stroking my arm while I stared at the wall. "I loved you. I just—I got lost."

"I know, Thomas," I would whisper, my hand gripping a hidden recorder in my pocket. "Tell me again. Tell me how it happened at the lake."
