Chapter 1 - The Wailing Sirens of GreenwichThe red and blue strobes of the emergency vehicles sliced through the thick Connecticut fog, painting the stone facade of the Vance estate in violent shades of crimson and blue.

Inside the grand master foyer, the air smelled of ozone, copper, and cold rain. Paramedics moved with frantic, practiced efficiency, shouting vital signs over the radio as they loaded Julian onto a motorized gurney. His face was a ghastly shade of purplish-gray, his chest heaving under the mechanical CPR chest-compression device strapped around his torso.
"Pulse is forty and dropping!" a paramedic shouted, steering the gurney through the double oak doors. "Severe anaphylactic reaction complicated by acute neurological toxicity! We need an epinephrine drip and a toxicology screen the second we hit the bay!"
Clara stood by the marble staircase, wrapping a oversized cashmere cardigan around her trembling shoulders. To anyone watching, she was the picture of a distraught, heartbroken wife—pale, wide-eyed, her breath coming in ragged gasps. But beneath the performance, her mind was operating with razor-sharp clarity.
Beside her, Eleanor was sitting on a velvet settee, a damp towel pressed against her forehead. The family matriarch, usually a picture of cold, aristocratic perfection, looked utterly shattered. Her expensive silk nightgown was smudged with dust from where she had collapsed, and her gold-framed reading glasses hung lopsided from a chain around her neck.
"My boy..." Eleanor whimpered, her voice cracking. "My poor, brilliant boy... How could this happen? He was just working late in his office..."
"He wasn't in his office, Eleanor," Clara said softly, her voice carrying across the silent foyer like a drawn blade.
Eleanor flinched. She looked up, her dark eyes narrowing with a sudden, venomous flash of hatred that momentarily broke through her shock. "Shut your mouth, Clara. This is a medical emergency, not a time for your paranoid delusions!"
Sienna stood ten feet away, huddled against the grand piano, wrapped in a dark velvet robe that didn't belong to her. Her mascara was smeared across her cheeks, her lips swollen and trembling. Two police officers stood on either side of her, taking preliminary notes.
"Ma'am," Officer Miller, a veteran Greenwich investigator, asked Sienna, turning a page on his notepad. "You stated the victim entered your room at approximately midnight? Was he showing any signs of distress before he collapsed?"
Sienna’s eyes darted nervously to Eleanor, then to Clara, before dropping to the polished floorboards. "He... he came in to check the heating unit. The radiator in my room was making a strange sound. Then suddenly he... he started screaming. He grabbed his chest, fell against the mirror, and started convulsing."
"Check the radiator?" Clara let out a low, dry laugh that made both police officers turn their heads. "In mid-July? Sienna, at least make the lie believable."
"Clara!" Eleanor shrieked, standing up so fast her settee wobbled. "Have you no decency?! Your husband is fighting for his life in an ambulance, and you're hurling vile accusations at a traumatized girl?!"
"She isn't traumatized, Eleanor. She's terrified," Clara said quietly, walking toward the police officers. "Because when the toxicology report comes back from the hospital, it won't just show why Julian collapsed. It will show what he took before he walked into that bedroom."
Sienna gasped, clutching her robe tighter around her throat, her face turning chalk-white.
Officer Miller looked between the three women, his eyes sharpening with professional suspicion. "Mrs. Vance, do you have reason to believe your husband ingested a controlled substance tonight?"
Before Clara could answer, the heavy front doors slammed open.
Ethan Vance burst into the foyer, soaking wet, his hi-vis construction jacket slick with rainwater, his face twisted in a mixture of horror and confusion. He had driven ninety miles an hour from the Interstate bridge site the moment the home security system triggered an emergency police dispatch.
"Sienna!" Ethan shouted, rushing toward his wife. "What happened?! The security alert said three squads were at the house! Is Julian—"
He stopped dead in his tracks.
His eyes fell on the shattered mirror frame visible through the open door of Sienna's guest room. Then he saw his mother’s frantic expression, the police officers holding evidence bags containing an open black blister pack found on Sienna's nightstand, and the torn silk sheets scattered across the hall floor.
"Ethan..." Sienna choked out, taking a step back, her hands trembling violently. "Ethan, baby, I can explain—"
"Why was Julian in your bedroom at midnight, Sienna?" Ethan asked. His voice wasn't loud. It held the quiet, terrifying stillness of a man watching his entire life burn down in real time.
"He... he was fixing the door lock!" Sienna stammered, tears pouring down her face. "Ethan, please, you know how Julian is! He was being bossy and intrusive!"
"He was fixing the door lock half-naked?" Clara said from the archway.
Ethan slowly turned his head to look at Clara. The realization hit him like an electric shock. The months of sudden business trips, his brother's sudden coldness toward Clara, the expensive jewelry Sienna had claimed were "family heirlooms" gifted by Eleanor... every piece of the puzzle snapped into place.

"You knew," Ethan whispered, turning his gaze toward his mother. "Mom... you knew?"
Eleanor didn't answer. She pulled her silk robe tighter around her chest and looked away toward the grand fireplace, her silence an absolute, damning confession.
