Chapter 2 - The Audit at Greenwich GeneralThe ICU waiting room on the fourth floor of Greenwich General Hospital was silent save for the hum of the vending machines and the soft, rhythmic paging of doctors over the PA system.

It was 4:30 AM.
Clara sat in a corner armchair, a fresh paper cup of black coffee resting untouched in her lap. Across the room, Ethan sat on a vinyl couch, his head buried in his hands, his knuckles raw and red where he had slammed his fists against his steering wheel in the hospital parking lot.
Eleanor paced near the glass doors, her phone pressed to her ear, speaking in frantic, hushed whispers to the Vance family’s senior corporate counsel.
"I don't care what time it is, Arthur!" Eleanor hissed into the receiver. "We need a gag order on the emergency room staff immediately! If the press gets hold of the toxicology report or the police incident log from the house, the Vance Medical stock will plummet twenty percent before the opening bell!"
She hung up, wiping a sweat-stained hair lock from her forehead, and glared across the room at Clara.
"You look remarkably calm for a woman whose husband might be brain-dead by morning," Eleanor sneered, stepping closer to Clara’s chair.
Clara took a slow, deliberate sip of her lukewarm coffee. "Julian isn't going to die, Eleanor. The paramedics stabilized his airway before they pulled out of the driveway. But he won't be attending any board meetings this week."
"You wicked, cold-hearted little creature," Eleanor whispered, leaning down so her face was inches from Clara’s. "I always knew you were a snake. You married my son for his money, and now that his career is at its peak, you sit there hoping he rots so you can claim his estate!"
Clara set her coffee cup down on the side table with a soft, deliberate click.
She stood up, matching Eleanor’s height step for step.
"I didn't marry Julian for his money, Eleanor," Clara said in a voice that was ice-cold and perfectly measured. "When I married him six years ago, he was three hundred thousand dollars in debt from his failed startup in Boston. My father paid off his creditors. My family's trust fund collateralized his first corporate loan at Vance Medical. I gave him the foundation he built his golden career on."
Eleanor’s jaw tightened, a sudden flicker of unease flashing across her face.
"And as for claiming his estate," Clara continued, pulling a thin leather folder from her oversized handbag, "I don't need to claim anything. Because while you were busy hiding Julian's affair with your younger son's wife, my forensic accountants completed an emergency audit of Vance Medical’s subsidiary accounts."
Eleanor froze. "What are you talking about?"
"Julian didn't buy Sienna those diamond necklaces and Hermès bags with his sales bonuses, Eleanor," Clara whispered, opening the folder to reveal three pages of highlighted bank ledgers. "He bought them using offshore shell accounts registered under Vance Medical's clinical research budget. He’s been embezzling corporate funds for eighteen months."
Ethan looked up from the vinyl couch, his bloodshot eyes widening. "What?"
"Show me those papers!" Eleanor demanded, lunging forward to snatch the folder.
Clara stepped back effortlessly, sliding the folder back into her handbag. "Not a chance, Eleanor. These documents are already sitting in the secure inbox of the Securities and Exchange Commission, along with the police report from tonight."

"You ruined him!" Eleanor gasped, clutching her throat as if she were the one suffocating. "You ruined my family!"
"No, Eleanor," Clara said, looking past her at the double doors of the ICU as a doctor in blue scrubs stepped out into the waiting room. "Julian ruined himself. I just turned on the lights."
