Chapter 3 - The Broken BrotherDr. Aris, the chief ICU attending physician, pulled off his surgical cap and looked around the quiet waiting room.

"Family of Julian Vance?"

Eleanor rushed forward, her frantic hands clutching the doctor’s sleeve. "Doctor! How is he?! Is my son going to be okay?!"

"Mr. Vance is stable, but he remains in a medically induced coma," Dr. Aris explained, his tone professional and entirely unreadable. "The acute respiratory failure was caused by a severe, unexpected interaction between a heavy dose of a synthetic PDE5 inhibitor and a concentrated veterinary sedative—specifically, a liquid neuro-inhibitor typically used in large-animal sedation."

Ethan stood up from the couch, his jaw dropped in horror. "A veterinary sedative? How the hell did that get into his system?"

"We are legally required to report these findings to the local authorities," Dr. Aris noted, eyeing Eleanor’s panicked face. "The police department has already placed an officer outside his room to secure any physical evidence. Once Mr. Vance wakes up, investigators will need to interview him regarding the origin of the compound."

Eleanor looked as if she were about to faint again. She grabbed Dr. Aris's arm. "Doctor, please! Is there any brain damage?!"

"It's too early to tell," Dr. Aris said gently. "We will know more once we lower the sedation levels in twenty-four hours. For now, only one visitor is allowed at a time."

"I'm going in," Ethan said coldly, stepping past his mother toward the ICU doors.

"Ethan, no!" Eleanor cried, grabbing his hi-vis jacket. "You can't go in there while you're angry! He's your brother!"

Ethan turned around, ripping his arm out of her grip with such force that Eleanor stumbled backward against the wall.

"He stopped being my brother the moment he walked into my wife's bedroom, Mom!" Ethan roared, his voice echoing down the sterile hospital corridor, making two nurses at the station jump. "And you... you sat at our Sunday dinners, watching me work eighty hours a week on that bridge, while you helped them hide it!"

"Ethan, listen to me—"

"Don't touch me!" Ethan shouted, tears of pure, agonizing betrayal streaming down his face. "Don't you ever touch me again!"

He turned and walked away—not toward Julian's room, but toward the hospital elevators.

Clara watched him leave, feeling a sharp pang of genuine pity for the younger brother. Ethan was the only truly innocent person in the Vance house—a hardworking, humble engineer who had been treated like a second-class citizen by his own mother and brother for his entire life.

Clara picked up her coat and bag.

"Where do you think you're going?" Eleanor barked from the wall, her voice hoarse and ragged.

"Home," Clara replied smoothly. "I have a house to pack up, a divorce petition to sign, and a police interview to attend at nine o'clock."

"You won't get a dime, Clara!" Eleanor screamed after her as Clara stepped into the opening elevator doors. "I will hire every high-powered trial attorney in Manhattan! I will make sure you leave this marriage with nothing!"

As the silver elevator doors began to close, Clara met Eleanor’s frantic, bloodshot eyes with a calm, triumphant smile.

"I don't need your money, Eleanor," Clara said softly as the doors clicked shut. "I'm taking my own."
