Chapter 5 - The Corporate ExecutionThree days later, the glass tower of Vance Medical Headquarters in downtown Manhattan was surrounded by television news trucks and corporate reporters.

The news had broken at 6:00 AM on the Wall Street Journal:
"VANCE MEDICAL DIRECTOR PLACED ON EMERGENCY LEAVE AMID EMBEZZLEMENT AND TOXICOLOGY INVESTIGATION; SHARES PLUMMET 32%"
Inside the executive boardroom on the forty-fifth floor, Eleanor Vance sat at the head of the massive mahogany conference table, flanked by three senior criminal defense attorneys and two crisis PR consultants.
Across the table sat the Board of Directors, led by Chairman Marcus Thorne—a stern, silver-haired tycoon who had been a close friend of Clara’s late father.
"This is an unmitigated disaster, Eleanor!" Thorne slammed his palm onto the table, sending coffee cups rattling. "Julian is sitting in a hospital bed under police guard, the SEC has subpoenaed our last three years of clinical research ledgers, and the press is calling us a syndicate!"
"Marcus, please!" Eleanor pleaded, her polished image completely shattered. "Julian was set up! He was poisoned by his wife! She’s trying to destroy this family out of spite!"
"Poisoned?" Thorne let out a dry, bitter laugh. "The NYPD toxicology report arrived on my desk an hour ago, Eleanor. The veterinary compound found in Julian’s system was traced to an unregulated batch of imported enhancement supplements he ordered using his corporate credit card!"
Eleanor blinked, her mouth opening and closing in utter shock. "What... what did you say?"
"He bought the compound himself!" Thorne shouted. "He’s been ordering black-market supplements from an unverified distributor in Eastern Europe for eight months to hide his physical exhaustion! He poisoned himself out of sheer, arrogant stupidity!"
Eleanor slumped back into her leather chair, her face going completely drained of color.
The blue pill... the veterinary compound... Clara hadn't brought it into the house. Julian had ordered it himself, and Clara had simply let his own secret addictions consume him.
The heavy double doors of the boardroom opened.
Clara walked in.
She was dressed in a sharp, impeccably tailored black trousersuit, carrying a sleek leather briefcase. Behind her walked Ethan Vance, wearing a dark suit, his posture straight, his expression calm and resolute.
"Clara?" Eleanor gasped, sitting up. "What are you doing here?! This is a private board meeting!"
"Not anymore, Eleanor," Chairman Thorne announced, standing up to greet Clara with a respectful nod. "As of nine o’clock this morning, Mrs. Clara Vance executed her voting rights as the primary beneficiary of the Sterling Family Trust—which holds twenty-four percent of Vance Medical's preferred voting shares."
Eleanor stared at Clara in absolute horror. "You... you hold the Sterling shares?"
"My father bought those shares twenty years ago, Eleanor," Clara said softly, sitting at the center of the conference table. "He left them in a restricted trust that activated upon my formal separation from Julian."
She pulled a stack of legal documents from her briefcase and laid them flat on the mahogany table.
"As the primary voting shareholder," Clara declared, her voice ringing clearly across the silent boardroom, "I motion for the immediate, permanent termination of Julian Vance from all corporate positions, the revocation of his stock options, and the appointment of a new Vice President of Operations."
"You can't do this!" Eleanor screamed, half-rising from her chair. "Who could possibly replace Julian?!"
Clara looked at Ethan, who stepped forward and placed his own engineering credentials on the table.
"Ethan Vance," Chairman Thorne announced, smiling broadly. "A licensed structural engineer with twelve years of unblemished field experience, an impeccable record of fiscal responsibility, and zero corporate conflicts of interest."
The board members immediately nodded in unanimous agreement.
"All in favor?" Thorne called out.
Every single hand at the table went up—except Eleanor’s.

Eleanor looked around the room at the men who had once bowed to her family's every whim, then at her youngest son, who refused to look her in the eye, and finally at Clara—the "penniless charity case" who had just stripped the Vance family of their entire corporate empire in less than five minutes.
Eleanor lowered her head onto the table and wept.
