Chapter 4 - The Confession in the RainBy 7:30 AM, the rain over Greenwich had lightened into a dull, gray drizzle.

Clara’s luxury SUV pulled into the gravel driveway of the Vance estate. The crime scene tape that had draped the front porch earlier had been removed, but the house felt cold, dead, and hollow.
As Clara stepped out of her vehicle, she saw a figure sitting on the wet stone steps leading to the front porch.
Sienna.
She was wearing a simple pair of jeans and a damp rain jacket, her small suitcase sitting beside her on the gravel. Her face was red, her eyes swollen shut from hours of crying.
When she heard Clara’s footsteps on the gravel, she looked up, her lower lip trembling.
"He kicked me out," Sienna whispered, her voice barely audible over the patter of rain on the roof tiles. "Ethan called the bank this morning. He froze our joint accounts and told me if I'm not gone by noon, he'll file a formal police report for corporate wire fraud."
Clara stood three feet away, holding her umbrella over her own head, looking down at the woman who had helped destroy her marriage.
"What did you expect, Sienna?" Clara asked softly. "Did you think Ethan would forgive you? Did you think Julian was going to leave me and marry you?"
Sienna buried her face in her wet hands, letting out a ragged, heartbroken sob. "Julian promised me... he swore he was leaving you at the end of the month! He said he was transferring three million dollars from the medical accounts to a Swiss trust in my name! He said we were moving to Italy!"
Clara let out a low, cold breath. "Julian tells everyone what they want to hear, Sienna. He told me he loved me every morning before he went to work. He told Ethan he was proud of him every time Ethan finished a project."
Sienna looked up, her eyes wide with frantic, desperate terror. "Clara... please. I know you hate me. I know I deserve everything that happens to me. But please... tell me the truth. Did you put something in that pill?"
The air between them went razor-thin.
Clara didn't flinch. Her expression remained as smooth as polished ice.
"I don't know what you're talking about, Sienna," Clara said calmly. "Julian was taking black-market performance pills he bought online. Everyone knows those unregulated supplements are contaminated with industrial toxins."
"I saw his jacket," Sienna stammered, stepping closer, her hands trembling. "I saw the blister pack in his coat three days ago! It was sealed! But when he took it last night... he started choking five minutes later!"
Clara leaned in slightly, her voice dropping into a quiet, dangerous register that made Sienna’s blood run cold.
"If I were you, Sienna," Clara whispered, "I would worry less about performance pills and more about the SEC investigators who are going to knock on your apartment door tomorrow morning. Because every single piece of diamond jewelry sitting in your suitcase was paid for with stolen Vance Medical funds. And in the state of Connecticut, receiving stolen corporate property carries a seven-year prison sentence."
Sienna’s jaw dropped. She backed away from Clara as if she were looking at a ghost.
Without another word, Sienna grabbed her small suitcase, hurried down the gravel driveway toward the main road, and vanished into the gray morning mist.

Clara watched her leave, then unlocked the heavy oak front door of the estate and stepped inside.
It was time to collect her life.
