Chapter 5 - The Final JudgmentThe courtroom of the Federal District Court of New York was packed to capacity on the morning of sentencing. Journalists, corporate analysts, and legal spectators crowded the wooden benches, eager to witness the final chapter of the most explosive white-collar downfall of the decade.

Adrian Mercer sat at the defense table, wearing an orange jumpsuit that hung loosely on his frame. He looked hollowed out, his hair unkempt, his eyes bloodshot and haunted. He had aged ten years in less than a month.
Beside him sat his court-appointed public defender, looking entirely defeated.
When the presiding judge entered the courtroom, everyone rose. The formal sentencing hearing moved with ruthless efficiency. The prosecution presented the finalized summaries of wire fraud, embezzlement, tax evasion, and corporate extortion orchestrated by Adrian and aided by Vanessa Vale—who was currently serving a reduced sentence in a minimum-security facility upstate after cooperating with federal prosecutors.
“Mr. Mercer,” the judge said, his voice echoing authoritatively through the silent room. “The scale of your deception, the deliberate falsification of corporate records, and the systematic abuse of financial systems for personal enrichment represent a severe breach of public and legal trust. Do you have anything to say before the court hands down its final judgment?”
Adrian slowly stood up, his legs trembling slightly. He looked around the courtroom, his gaze sweeping over the gallery until it landed squarely on the back row.
There, sitting quietly with her arms crossed and an expression of absolute, untouchable serenity, sat Claire.
Adrian’s lips quivered. He opened his mouth, wanting to scream, wanting to beg, wanting to blame everyone but himself. But deep down, beneath the shattered remains of his pride, he knew the truth. He had held everything a man could ever dream of, and he had destroyed it with his own hands out of sheer arrogance and cruelty.
“I... I have nothing to say, Your Honor,” Adrian whispered, his voice cracking. “I accept responsibility.”
The judge nodded grimly. “In light of the severity of the charges, and the deliberate evasion of regulatory oversight, this court sentences you to twelve years in a federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole for the first eight years. Furthermore, all remaining personal assets are seized to satisfy restitution orders.”
The gavel slammed down with a sharp, final crack.

Clack.
The sound signaled the definitive end of Adrian Mercer. As federal marshals cuffed him and led him away through the side doors, he cast one last, desperate look toward the back of the courtroom. But Claire didn't even blink. She simply stood up, turned around, and walked out into the bright morning sun.
