Chapter 1 - The Shattered Mask & The Unedited Frame

The silence inside the private hospital suite was suffocating, heavy with the stench of spilled vintage champagne, ozone from shattered light fixtures, and copper.

Isabella Rossi stood frozen beneath the gold-trimmed recessed lights, her breath coming in quick, shallow hitches. A single tear—masterfully forced—rolled down her sculpted cheek, glistening like a misplaced jewel against her porcelain skin. She squeezed her eyes shut for a microsecond, letting her body tremble with the practiced grace of a seasoned stage actress.

“She attacked me, Marcus,” Isabella whimpered, her voice dropping into a desperate, fragile pitch. She gestured toward Khloe, her manicured fingers shaking. “I only came upstairs to offer her a glass of water... to tell her how beautiful she looked at the gala. But she snapped! She was jealous of how close we were speaking downstairs. She grabbed my arm, threw her champagne glass at me, and when I tried to push her away to protect myself—”

“Shut up.”

The words did not come out as a shout. They came out as a frozen blade, spoken in a voice so devoid of human warmth that even Elaine Parker, the veteran event coordinator standing in the doorway, took an involuntary step back into the corridor.

Marcus Thorne did not look at Isabella. His dark, obsidian eyes were locked entirely on his wife.

Khloe lay curled on her side on the cold, unforgiving white marble floor. Her white silk maternity gown—tailored specifically to cradle her seven-month pregnant belly—was torn at the shoulder, rumpled, and stained with dark crimson liquid where the crystal glass had shattered beside her. Her breath came in ragged, wheezing gasps, her tiny frame shivering as her hands remained tightly locked around her stomach, guarding the life growing inside her.

“Khloe…” Marcus whispered.

In one fluid movement, the billionaire titan—a man who had brought international conglomerates to their knees without ever raising his voice—dropped to his knees on the glass-strewn floor. He didn't care about the sharp shards biting through the fabric of his thousands-dollar Italian tuxedo trousers. He didn't care about the blood that smeared onto his cuffs.

His massive, warm hands gently touched Khloe’s face, tracing the sharp bruise forming along her jawline where Isabella’s hand had struck her.

“Don’t move, my love,” Marcus murmured, his voice cracking with a raw, terrifying agony he had never shown to a living soul. “I’m here. I’m right here.”

“The… the baby, Marcus…” Khloe managed to choke out, tears cutting clean paths through the faint powder on her face. Her voice was barely a rasp, her knuckles white where she clutched her stomach. “She… she kicked me. The baby isn't moving…”

The world stopped spinning for Marcus Thorne.

A dark, lethal shadow crossed his features. The gentle touch he gave his wife remained soft as feathers, but when he turned his head slowly to look at Isabella, the expression in his eyes was monstrous.

Isabella flinched, stepping backward until her stiletto heels caught on the edge of the mahogany side table. “Marcus… you have to believe me! She’s lying to you! She’s trying to turn you against me because she knows you and I share a past! She tripped over her own dress!”

“A seven-month pregnant woman, bruised on her jaw, her ribcage, and her side, tripped over her own dress and threw herself into a marble table?” Marcus asked. His tone was eerily conversational, yet the air pressure in the room seemed to plummet into sub-zero temperatures. “And you, standing over her with your dress unruffled and her blood on the heel of your shoe… you are the victim?”

“Yes! I swear on my life!” Isabella cried out, covering her face. “Elaine, tell him! You saw how unstable Khloe was downstairs! You saw her leaving the floor in a huff!”

Elaine Parker paled, looking between the powerful Rossi heiress and the terrifying figure of Marcus Thorne kneeling over his bleeding wife. “I… I only saw Mrs. Thorne walk upstairs quietly, Miss Rossi. I didn't see—”

“She’s lying too!” Isabella screamed, her composure cracking around the edges. “You’re all taking her side because she’s his wife!”

“No one needs to take sides, Isabella,” a authoritative, booming voice echoed from the hallway.

Heavy, measured footsteps sounded against the polished floorboards outside. The double doors opened wider, and four men in black tactical suits pushed into the private suite, clearing a path for a tall, broad-shouldered man in a charcoal-grey tailored suit. His hair was silver at the temples, his posture commanding absolute authority.

It was Harrison Vance.

As the Global Security Director of Vance Defense Industries and the Majority Owner of St. Jude’s International Hospital, Harrison Vance was a man even foreign prime ministers treated with extreme caution. But to Khloe, he was simply Uncle Harrison—her mother’s elder brother, the man who had silently watched over her from the shadows ever since she married into the Thorne empire.

Harrison’s eyes swept the room, taking in his niece on the floor, the blood, the shattered glass, and Isabella standing in the corner. His jaw tightened so hard a muscle twitched beneath his scar.

“Uncle… Harrison?” Khloe gasped out, her eyes fluttering as the pain in her abdomen flared into an unbearable, burning fire.

“Hold on, sweetheart,” Harrison said, his calm, deep voice instantly cutting through the panic. He waved his hand toward the hallway. “Trauma Team A, get in here NOW! Full obstetric surgical setup! Move!”

Within three seconds, six elite trauma doctors and nurses flooded the suite, pushing a specialized gurney. Marcus assisted them with practiced, fierce care, lifting Khloe as if she were made of spun glass, placing her onto the gurney as she let out a sharp scream of agony.

“Marcus…” Khloe gasped, reaching up, her fingers locking onto his tie. “Don't leave me…”

“I’m right behind you, Khloe. I will never leave you,” Marcus promised, kissing her forehead, his eyes burning with unshed tears as the medical team rushed her toward the private elevator reserved for emergency surgeries.

As the medical team disappeared down the corridor, Harrison Vance remained in the suite. He slowly pulled an encrypted tablet from his inner jacket pocket and tapped the glass screen twice.

Isabella tried to smooth her red gown, her eyes darting toward the open door. “Mr. Vance… I am terribly sorry for this chaotic scene. I know this is your hospital, but your niece attacked me. I intend to file charges against the Thorne family for—”

“This hospital suite,” Harrison interrupted smoothly, stepping closer to Isabella until he towered over her, “was upgraded six months ago under my personal orders. It is equipped with military-grade, multi-angle thermal optics and full-spectrum audio recording devices. The lenses are hidden inside the recessed gold trim above your head.”

Isabella’s face went completely, utterly white. The blood drained from her lips so fast she looked like a corpse.

“What… what did you say?” she whispered.

Harrison didn't answer with words. He turned the tablet around.

On the 4K display, high-definition video played with crystal-clear audio.

The recording showed Khloe standing near the table, minding her own business. It showed Isabella entering the room, closing the door, and whispering: “You were never supposed to stand beside him. You were supposed to smile for the cameras, give him the child he wanted… and disappear.”

It showed Khloe asking her to leave.

It showed Isabella lunging forward with both hands, violently shoving Khloe into the marble table.

It captured the sickening sound of the champagne glass shattering, followed by Isabella’s cold, sociopathic smile as she raised her stiletto heel and brutally kicked Khloe’s pregnant stomach while she lay defenseless on the floor.

Every second. Every angle. Every word.

The audio captured Khloe’s desperate cries for her baby, and Isabella’s soft, mocking laughter before the door had burst open.

Elaine Parker, who was still standing nearby, covered her mouth in absolute horror as she watched the tablet screen. “Dear God… she tried to kill the baby…”

Isabella stumbled back, her hand flying to her mouth, her eyes wide with unadulterated terror. The theatrical tears were gone. The victim posture was shattered. What remained was a cornered, panicked animal.

“That… that’s a deepfake!” Isabella shrieked, her voice turning high and ragged. “You edited that! You’re her uncle! You’re setting me up to protect your family’s reputation!”

Harrison turned the tablet off and slid it back into his jacket pocket. He looked down at her with an expression of pure, unadulterated disgust.

“My security team has already backed this file up to three off-site quantum-encrypted servers,” Harrison said softly. “The District Attorney has already received a copy. The Chief of Police is currently standing in the lobby downstairs.”

He glanced at his four armed security guards.

“Hold Miss Rossi in this room,” Harrison ordered coldly. “If she moves so much as an inch, use whatever force is necessary. She will remain right here until the police hand her the handcuffs she so richly deserves.”
