Chapter 6 - Where Sunshine Meets the Throne

One year later.

The summer sunset over the Lake Michigan coast painted the sky in brilliant hues of gold, violet, and crimson.

The gardens of the Thorne Estate were decorated with thousands of glowing fairy lights, glass lanterns hanging from ancient oak trees, and long tables covered in white linens, crystal glassware, and fresh white peonies.

Five hundred guests—the most influential leaders, diplomats, artists, and philanthropists in the world—gathered on the manicured lawns. But tonight was not a corporate gala. There were no fake compliments, no quiet cruelties, and no hidden jealousies.

Tonight was the First Birthday of Victoria Thorne, combined with Marcus and Khloe’s formal Vow Renewal.

Music played softly from a live string quartet near the fountain.

At the edge of the terrace, Khloe stood looking out over the water. She wore a custom gown of ivory silk that flowed gracefully to the grass, her dark hair pinned back with tiny diamond clips. In her arms, she held one-year-old Victoria, who was wearing a matching little white dress, giggling happily as she reached for the glowing lanterns.

Marcus walked up behind them, wrapping his broad arms around Khloe’s waist, resting his chin on her shoulder.

“You look like a dream, Mrs. Thorne,” Marcus whispered into her ear, kissing her jaw softly.

“I was just remembering two years ago,” Khloe said softly, leaning her head back against his chest. “When I thought I had to fight the world alone. When I thought high society would consume me.”

“And now?” Marcus asked, turning her gently in his arms so he could look into her eyes.

“Now I know that no matter how dark the room gets,” Khloe smiled, touching his cheek, “I have a husband who will burn down the world to protect me, an uncle who guards my back, and a daughter who gives me ultimate joy.”

From the center of the terrace, Uncle Harrison stood up, holding a glass of champagne, tapping a silver spoon against the glass to gather everyone’s attention.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Harrison’s voice echoed warmly over the crowd. “If I could have your attention for a moment.”

The guests quieted down, turning toward the stage.

“One year ago,” Harrison began, looking directly at Khloe and Marcus, “our family faced a storm that threatened to tear away our greatest blessing. Certain people believed that wealth and cruelty could destroy love. They believed that a quiet, pure heart was a weakness.”

Harrison raised his glass high toward the sky.

“They were wrong. Because Khloe Thorne showed us that true strength isn't about shouting or hurting others; it’s about standing firm, protecting what is sacred, and loving without fear. To Marcus, Khloe, and little Victoria—the heart and soul of the Thorne Dynasty!”

“To the Thornes!” the crowd roared in unison, raising their glasses into the evening air.

Marcus took Victoria from Khloe’s arms, setting the toddler gently onto the soft grass, where she immediately began chasing a colorful butterfly near the flowerbeds, giggling with pure delight.

Marcus turned back to Khloe, taking both of her hands into his own under the canopy of fairy lights.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a sleek, velvet box. Inside lay a breathtaking ring—a rare canary-yellow diamond flanked by two flawless white stones, shimmering like liquid sunshine under the party lights.

Khloe gasped, her hand flying to her heart. “Marcus… what is this?”

“When we first got married,” Marcus said softly, looking down at her with a devotion that shone brighter than any jewel, “it was a quiet ceremony. I was focused on business, on protecting my family’s name, on building an empire. I didn't give you the fairy-tale moment you deserved.”

He took the ring, gently slipping it onto her finger alongside her original band.

“This yellow diamond,” Marcus murmured, lifting her hand to kiss her knuckles, “represents the light you brought into my cold, arrogant life. You saved me, Khloe. You made me a father. You gave me a home.”

Tears of pure happiness welled up in Khloe’s eyes. She stepped forward, wrapping her arms tightly around his neck, pulling him down into a deep, passionate, eternal kiss.

The crowd erupted into thunderous applause, the string quartet striking up a joyous waltz as fireworks began to launch from the coastal boats out on the lake, lighting up the night sky in bursts of gold, green, and brilliant silver.

Beneath the exploding stars, surrounded by love, security, and absolute peace, Khloe rested her head against Marcus’s chest, holding his hand tightly as their daughter ran back to hug their knees.
