Chapter 5 - The Reckoning of the Thorne Dynasty

The legal trial of the decade concluded on a stormy Tuesday morning in downtown Chicago.
Inside the packed federal courtroom, media cameras were prohibited, but hundreds of journalists sat in the pews. Isabella Rossi sat at the defense table, wearing an orange prison jumpsuit, her hands and ankles chained with heavy steel shackles. Her long, glamorous hair was dull and unwashed, her face pale and hollow. Beside her, her father Julian sat in matching prison attire, staring blankly at the wooden desk.
The federal judge, a stern woman in her sixties, knocked her wooden gavel against the desk.
“In the case of the United States versus Isabella Rossi and Julian Rossi,” the judge declared, her voice echoing off the high plaster ceilings, “the court has reviewed the overwhelming digital, physical, and testimonial evidence.”
She looked down at Isabella with icy disdain.
“Isabella Rossi, your actions inside St. Jude’s Hospital were not merely an act of jealousy; they were a calculated, brutal attempt to kill an unborn child out of malicious spite. Your lack of remorse during these proceedings is appalling.”
The judge turned the page of her official sentencing document.
“On the count of attempted murder of an unborn child, you are sentenced to eighteen years in a maximum-security state penitentiary without the possibility of early parole. On the counts of aggravated battery and corporate stalker conspiracy, an additional seven years, to run consecutively.”
Isabella’s breath hitched. She let out a ragged, choked scream. “Twenty-five years?! NO! Please, Your Honor! I’m too young! I was emotional! Papa, do something!”
Julian Rossi didn't even turn his head. He was sentenced to twelve years for corporate fraud, bribery, and obstruction of justice.
As federal marshals grabbed Isabella’s arms, dragging her screaming and kicking down the center aisle toward the holding doors, she looked toward the back of the gallery.
Sitting in the front row of the gallery was Marcus Thorne.
He looked striking in a midnight-blue suit, his demeanor calm, powerful, and utterly untroubled. Beside him sat Harrison Vance. Marcus didn't say a word to Isabella as she was dragged past him. He simply raised his hand, looking at his watch, dismissing her existence as easily as stepping over a speck of dust.
Isabella’s screams faded behind the heavy steel doors as they slammed shut, ending her presence in high society forever.
Two hours later, Marcus arrived back at the Thorne Estate—a magnificent fifty-acre waterfront manor overlooking Lake Michigan.
The estate, which had once felt cold and quiet, was now overflowing with warmth, fresh flowers, and soft laughter.
Marcus stepped through the grand foyer, tossing his coat to the butler, and walked into the sun-drenched nursery on the second floor.
The walls were painted in soft watercolor cream and peach. A handcrafted wooden crib sat near the window, draped in organic white cotton.
Khloe sat in a plush rocking chair by the window, holding a tiny bundle wrapped in a pink cashmere blanket. Her face was radiant, healthy, and glowing with an absolute, undisturbed peace.
Marcus walked silently across the rug, dropping to his knees beside the rocking chair.
He leaned over, looking down at the baby sleeping soundly against Khloe’s chest.
The baby had a thick mop of dark hair—just like Marcus’s—and tiny, delicate fingers that were currently curled around Khloe’s pinky finger.
“How is our little miracle?” Marcus whispered softly, reaching out to gently touch the baby’s impossibly soft cheek.
“She’s perfect, Marcus,” Khloe murmured, looking up at him with eyes brimming with love. “Dr. Aris said her lungs are completely clear. She passed all her weight checks with flying colors.”
“What should we name her?” Marcus asked, his eyes shining as he looked between his wife and his daughter. “We had a list of twenty names, but none of them seemed big enough for what she fought through.”
Khloe smiled, leaning down to press her lips to the baby’s forehead.
“Victoria,” Khloe said softly. “Victoria Thorne. Because she is our victory over everything that tried to break us.”

Marcus closed his eyes for a second, feeling a wave of emotion so profound it threatened to spill over. He wrapped his arms gently around Khloe and baby Victoria, holding his entire world in one safe, unbroken embrace.
“Victoria Thorne,” Marcus repeated, his voice thick with devotion. “Welcome to your family, my little princess.”
