Chapter 2 - The Sanctuary of Steel & Blood

The private surgical wing of St. Jude’s International Hospital was locked down under Condition Red.

Armed Vance Defense guards stood every five feet along the polished white corridors. The heavy steel doors leading into Trauma Operating Suite 1 were sealed, the bright red light above the frame glowing ominously in the quiet hallway.

Marcus Thorne stood outside the operating doors. He had refused the nurses’ offers to wash his hands or change out of his blood-stained shirt. His knuckles were raw, his face pale, his eyes fixed on the circular glass window of the doors. Inside, doctors in blue surgical gowns moved in frantic, disciplined synchronicity around his wife.

The sharp, rhythmic beep-beep-beep of the fetal heart monitor echoed through the hallway every time the door opened slightly.

80 beats per minute. Too slow. Dangerous.

“Placental abruption suspected!” a doctor’s voice shouted from inside. “Prepare for emergency micro-cesarean if the fetal distress doesn't stabilize in two minutes! Get three units of O-negative blood on standby!”

Marcus slammed his fist against the wall, the sound cracking like thunder in the empty corridor.

“Marcus.”

Harrison Vance walked down the hall, his expression grave, his footsteps heavy. He stood beside his nephew-in-law, looking at the blood dried on Marcus’s cuffs.

“How is she?” Harrison asked.

“She’s bleeding, Harrison,” Marcus choked out, his voice cracking as he buried his face in his hands. “She was protecting our child… and I wasn't there. I was downstairs shaking hands with corrupt politicians and socialites while that monster was hurting her!”

Harrison placed a large, firm hand on Marcus’s shoulder. “You didn't know, Marcus. Khloe went upstairs to rest because she wanted to shield you from high society’s noise. She didn't expect a snake to crawl into her sanctuary.”

“I’m going to destroy them,” Marcus said softly. He raised his head, and the raw, unbridled malice in his eyes made even Harrison take notice. “Not just Isabella. The entire Rossi family. Their shipping company, their political influence, their real estate holdings in Milan and New York… I will tear it all down until they are begging on the streets.”

“You won't have to do it alone,” Harrison said coldly. “Khloe is a Vance. Her mother was my sister. The Rossi family thought Khloe was a nobody—an orphan with no powerful background who got lucky by marrying a Thorne. They didn't know I spent twenty years building an invisible wall around her to keep her safe from my industry’s enemies.”

Harrison pulled out his phone, clicking a button.

“My legal division is already executing economic freezing petitions against Rossi Logistics,” Harrison continued. “By sunrise, every bank in Western Europe will halt their lines of credit. But first… we have a snake to process downstairs.”

Just then, the doors to Operating Suite 1 swung open.

Dr. Aris Thorne (no direct relation, but the hospital’s head of fetal medicine) stepped out, pulling off his surgical mask. He was dripping with sweat, but a faint, exhausted relief softened his face.

Marcus rushed forward, grabbing the doctor’s arms. “Aris! Tell me! Are they alive? Is Khloe okay?!”

“Breathe, Marcus,” Dr. Aris said quickly. “Your wife is a remarkably resilient woman. The kick she sustained caused localized internal hemorrhaging and partial placental detachment, but because you got her to us within six minutes of the trauma, we were able to stop the bleeding without an immediate emergency delivery.”

Marcus gasped, a violent wave of relief crashing over him so hard his knees buckled slightly. “And the baby? The baby’s heart rate?”

“We’ve stabilized the fetal heart rate back to 135 beats per minute,” Dr. Aris smiled slightly, placing a hand on Marcus’s shoulder. “Your baby girl is a fighter, Marcus. She’s small, and Khloe will need absolute, strict bed rest under hospital supervision for the remainder of her pregnancy, but they are both alive. They are going to make it.”

Marcus fell back against the wall, closing his eyes, a single, silent tear sliding down his face. “Thank God… thank God…”

“She’s being transferred to the Intensive Fetal Care Suite now,” Dr. Aris added. “She’s waking up from the sedation. She’s calling for you.”

Marcus didn't wait another second. He shoved past the doors and rushed into the room where Khloe was being wheeled toward the private elevator.

Khloe’s face was deathly pale, an IV line hooked into her arm, a fetal monitoring belt wrapped securely around her bump. Her eyelids fluttered open, heavy with anesthesia, but the moment her eyes met Marcus’s, she reached out her small hand.

Marcus caught her hand, dropping to his knees beside the rolling bed, kissing her knuckles over and over again.

“I’m here, Khloe. I’m right here,” he sobbed softly against her hand. “You did it, my love. Our baby girl is safe. You saved her.”

Khloe let out a shaky, beautiful breath, a faint smile touching her pale lips. “I knew… I knew you’d come for us…”

“I will always come for you,” Marcus whispered fiercely. “Now rest, my sweet girl. Let me handle the rest of the world.”

He squeezed her hand, standing up as the nurses wheeled her into the secure suite. He watched the doors lock behind her, turning to face Harrison, who was standing at the end of the hall with a dangerous smile on his face.

“The police are downstairs in the private lobby, Marcus,” Harrison said. “Isabella is in handcuffs, but her father, Julian Rossi, just arrived in a helicopter. He’s demanding her immediate release, threatening to sue the hospital and call the press.”

Marcus pulled off his torn tuxedo jacket, tossing it onto a chair. He rolled up his crisp white shirt sleeves, revealing the solid muscle beneath, his eyes burning with lethal intent.

“Let’s go meet Julian Rossi,” Marcus said coldly. “It’s time to show him what happens when you touch a Thorne.”
