Chapter 1 - The Sovereign Strike

The cold of the oak floorboards pressed against my cheek like an anchor, holding me steady while the room spun in violent, nauseating circles. The white pain behind my eyes slowly crystallized into a sharp, icy clarity. I didn't let a single tear slip. I didn't let my breathing falter.

Beneath the edge of the bed, my thumb remained pressed firmly against the cracked glass of my phone.

Adrian stood over me, adjusting the cuffs of his bespoke tuxedo jacket, a look of profound disgust on his face. Vanessa stood right beside him, taking another slow, triumphant sip of my vintage champagne.

"Look at her, Adrian," Vanessa laughed, her glass smile reflecting the harsh light of the chandelier. "She’s just going to lie there like a corpse. Honestly, you’d think she was the only woman in the world who ever got pregnant."

"Get up, Mara," Adrian barked, his voice laced with the unearned confidence of a man who believed the world revolved entirely around his financial portfolio. "My investors are waiting downstairs. The partners from the municipal fund want to see a united front. If you aren't down there in ten minutes, I will make sure your monthly allowance is permanently deleted from the family trust."

"I am already down there, Adrian," I whispered, my voice completely flat, deadpan, and chillingly calm.

Adrian frowned, his eyes narrowing as he looked down at me. "What the hell is that supposed to mean? Your head hit the floor too hard? Get up."

He didn't wait for a response. He turned on his heel, grabbing Vanessa’s hand as they walked out of the master suite, their laughter echoing down the hallway before the heavy oak doors slammed shut behind them.

The moment the lock clicked, the absolute silence of the room was broken by the sharp, high-frequency ringtone of my secure satellite terminal. I didn't answer it with my voice. I simply slid the screen open, activating the speakerphone.

"Mara," the voice of Alistair Vance, my senior corporate trustee, came through the line, low, precise, and carrying the weight of a multi-billion-dollar sovereign fund. "The transaction has cleared the federal clearinghouse. The margin default notice has been served to the Apex Venture Capital servers. Adrian Aurelius is no longer the majority shareholder. The debt swap has executed perfectly. You now hold 100% of the voting equity."

"The house, Alistair?" I asked, breathing slowly through a minor contraction, my hands resting protectively over the twins under my ribs.

"The deed to the estate was listed as primary collateral for his short-term liquidity loan," Alistair replied, the sound of papers rustling matching the digital ping of my tablet. "The eviction notice is being generated by the sheriff's department right now. They will arrive at the property in exactly forty-five minutes to clear the premises."

"Good," I said, slowly dragging myself up using the solid mahogany post of the bed, defying the pain in my spine. "Call the private medical extraction unit. I need a secure transport to the private wing of the Vale Clinic. The twins are coming early, Alistair, and I want the world cleared of all monsters before they take their first breath."
