Chapter 2 - The Liquidation Party

Downstairs in the grand ballroom, the music was deafening. Adrian Aurelius stood in the center of a circle of high-net-worth investors, his chest puffed out, a glass of expensive scotch held high as he boasted about the upcoming public offering of Apex Venture Capital.

"We are looking at a ten-times return on initial capital, gentlemen," Adrian beamed, his smile wide and arrogant as Vanessa leaned against his shoulder, her diamond necklace catching the light. "Apex doesn't just manage wealth—we dictate the flow of the market. By midnight tonight, the expansion contract will be finalized."

"To Adrian!" one of the venture capital boys shouted, raising his glass. "The man who always lands on his feet!"

Suddenly, the music stopped.

The heavy bass line cut out with a harsh, violent static screech that made the guests wince and cover their ears. The ambient lighting of the grand ballroom flashed once, twice, before shifting into a sterile, blinding bright white—the building's emergency maintenance mode.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Adrian shouted, turning toward the catering staff with a face contorted in rage. "Who turned off the audio?! Find the house manager!"

Before anyone could move, the massive double doors of the estate’s main entrance were pushed open from the outside.

Six uniformed county sheriff deputies, accompanied by a team of black-suited private security operators bearing the silver crest of the Vale Trust, marched into the room. At the front of the group walked Alistair Vance, carrying a leather briefcase and a certified federal court order.

"Adrian Aurelius?" the lead deputy called out, his voice echoing through the silent, terrified crowd of investors.

Adrian stepped forward, his arrogance returning as a defensive shield. "Do you know who I am?! This is a private residence! I am the CEO of Apex Venture Capital! You are trespassing on my property during a private corporate function!"

"Correction, Mr. Aurelius," Alistair Vance said, stepping forward and opening his ledger with a sharp, definitive snap. "This property no longer belongs to you. As of thirty minutes ago, the Apex Venture Capital Master Fund was placed into mandatory receivership due to a total margin default on your primary lines of credit. The collateral—including this residence and all assets within it—has been legally absorbed by the Vale Master Trust."

A collective intake of breath rippled through the room. Vanessa’s glass slipped from her fingers, shattering violently against the marble floor, the champagne splattering across her designer heels.

"That’s impossible!" Adrian screamed, his face turning an unhinged, violent shade of red. "The debt is private! The lender is a silent offshore corporation!"

"The silent offshore corporation is a wholly-owned subsidiary of your wife's family estate, Mr. Aurelius," Alistair Vance said, a razor-sharp smile cutting across his face. "Ms. Mara Vale-Aurelius has personally authorized the immediate foreclosure of all personal and corporate assets. Deputies, please clear the premises. Every individual currently in this room has exactly five minutes to exit the property before being arrested for criminal trespass."
