Chapter 4 - The Arraignment of the Broken

Three weeks later, the swelling in my joints had subsided, and the doctors finally downgraded my high-risk status to a stable, controlled observation phase. I refused to sit in a hospital room while the final blow was delivered.
Dressed in a flawless, tailored emerald-green maternity suit that hid the monitoring devices beneath my silk shirt, I walked into the federal courthouse downtown. Alistair Vance and a phalanx of six armed private security operators flanked me, clearing the corridor as reporters and cameras swarmed the entrance.
Inside the courtroom, Adrian Aurelius sat at the defense table. The transformation was shocking. His pristine, custom-tailored suits had been replaced by a standard, wrinkled grey detention uniform. His hair was unwashed, his posture bent, and the arrogant smirk that had defined his face for five years was completely gone, replaced by the raw, pathetic terror of a man who realized his executioner was his own wife.
"Your Honor," Adrian’s court-appointed public defender argued, his voice lacking any genuine conviction as he looked at the mountains of financial data stacked on the prosecutor's table. "My client is facing a complete corporate collapse. His assets have been seized, his home foreclosed upon, and he has no means to secure private counsel. We request immediate bail reduction so he can prepare his defense for the civil contract dispute."
The judge, a formidable veteran of the federal bench known for his absolute intolerance toward corporate racketeering and domestic cruelty, looked down over his glasses with pure disdain.
"This is not a civil contract dispute, counselor," the judge said, his voice echoing through the silent room. "The United States Attorney has just presented an unredacted federal grand jury indictment against your client for twenty-four counts of wire fraud, grand larceny, and systematic tax evasion. Furthermore, we have received a certified medical forensic report from the Vale Clinic detailing a pattern of physical assault against an eight-month-pregnant woman on strict bed rest."
The judge clicked his gavel once, the sound sharp and definitive.
"Bail is denied, Mr. Aurelius. You will remain in maximum-security federal custody pending trial. And if you or any individual associated with your defunct firm attempts to make contact with the victim or her legal representatives, I will personally ensure you serve the maximum consecutive sentence allowed under every single count of this indictment."
Adrian lunged forward against the steel chains binding his wrists to his waist, his eyes wide and bloodshot as he looked at me. "Mara! Please! You can't do this to me! I'm your husband! Think of the children! They need a father!"

I stood up slowly from the prosecution table, my face completely deadpan, my eyes holding his stare with a level of absolute, unyielding coldness that made his breath catch in his throat.
"My children have a lineage, Adrian," I said, my voice carrying clearly through the silent courtroom. "They have an estate, they have a mother, and they have a future. The only thing they don't have... is your name."
