Chapter 3 - The Sterile Fortress

The transition from the chaotic, screaming reality of the estate to the pristine, white environment of the Vale Private Clinic was seamless. I lay in a state-of-the-art labor and delivery suite, surrounded by the top fetal specialists in the state. Continuous fetal heart rate monitors hummed softly beside the bed, their steady, synchronized thump-thump, thump-thump providing a beautiful, life-giving symphony that washed away the memory of Adrian’s boots against my spine.
"The cervix is stable, Ms. Vale," the chief specialist reported, her voice filled with a reassuring, clinical calm. "The medication has stopped the premature contractions. The impact from the fall caused minor localized bruising, but the amniotic sacs are completely intact. The twins are fighting, and they are winning."
I let out a long, slow breath, my hand resting over my stomach. "Thank you, Doctor. Keep the facility locked down. I don't want a single outside distraction until my children are born."
"The perimeter is entirely secure," Ethan Harris, the head of our global security division, said as he stepped into the suite, his expression carved from granite. "Adrian and his mistress were escorted off the property in front of all their investors. The footage of his eviction is already trending on the financial networks. But more importantly, our digital forensic team has finalized the analysis of his corporate servers."
"He thought he was a financial genius," I murmured, my face deadpan as I reviewed the data on the digital display tablet beside my bed. "He believed that because I stayed in bed, I wasn't tracking the capital flows. He didn't know that my father taught me how to read an unredacted ledger before I was ten years old."

"He’s currently sitting in a cheap motel on the edge of the financial district," Ethan reported with a cold smile. "His corporate credit cards were declined at the desk. He had to pay cash from the wallet he had on him. Vanessa left him within two hours of the eviction notice, attempting to flee to her family's estate in Aspen, but our legal team has already issued a nationwide asset freeze against her accounts as a co-conspirator in the marital fraud case."
"Let them run," I said softly, looking out the window at the peaceful city lights below. "A mouse running inside a maze still belongs to the person who built the walls."
