Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Hallway

The transition was violent. Within a week, Emily had gone from the "cleaner’s daughter" to the "benefactor’s project."

The academy changed instantly. Before, she had been invisible; now, she was a pariah. As she walked through the locker room, conversations died. When she entered the studio, the girls moved away as if she carried a contagion.

But the real battle was in the studio.

Eleanor was a demanding taskmaster. She didn't care about Emily's background; she cared about potential. "Do not seek their approval," Eleanor would bark, her cane tapping rhythmically. "They have been dancing for their parents' vanity. You are dancing for your soul. Keep it there."

Vanessa, however, was playing a different game. She didn't shout or bully openly anymore. Instead, she used the whispers.

One afternoon, Emily walked into the breakroom to find a group of students huddled around a phone, laughing. As Emily passed, they fell silent. Vanessa stood up, smoothed her designer skirt, and walked over to Emily.

"So, Emily," Vanessa said, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. "I heard a rumor. Is it true your mother is still cleaning the floors here? Must be awkward for you, seeing her on her knees while you’re trying to be a princess."

Emily felt a surge of heat in her chest, but she forced herself to breathe. "My mother works hard for everything she has. There is no shame in honest work."

"Keep telling yourself that," Vanessa laughed. "But remember, a costume change doesn't change who you are. You’re still a cleaner’s daughter playing dress-up. And sooner or later, everyone will see the truth."

Emily retreated to the bathroom, her heart hammering. She pulled out her phone to call her mother, only to see a text from Grace: They let me go today, Emily. The board said they didn't want a conflict of interest with your scholarship. I'm okay, baby. Just focus on your dancing.

Emily stared at the screen, tears blurring her vision. They hadn't just humiliated her; they were trying to destroy her foundation. They were trying to take away her mother’s livelihood because she had dared to be talented.
