Chapter 5 - The Gala

The night of the Winter Gala, the auditorium was packed. The elite of the city were there—dignitaries, critics, and wealthy patrons.
Backstage, the atmosphere was thick with hairspray and nervous energy. Vanessa was in the corner, staring at the stage, her face pale. She was cast as the second lead. She had lost her edge; her movements were frantic, desperate.
Eleanor found Emily tying her shoes. The old teacher knelt beside her. "You have fought for this stage, Emily. Don't worry about the audience. Don't worry about the critics. Just dance for the girl who had to mop these floors."
Emily nodded.
The curtains rose.
When it was Vanessa’s turn, she danced with technical perfection, but it was hollow. There was no heart. The applause was polite, standard.
Then, the music changed. The modern piece began.
Emily walked onto the stage. She looked small against the vast backdrop, but as the music swelled, she expanded. She didn't just dance; she tore through the choreography. She leaped with a desperation that was mesmerizing. She spun with the grit of someone who had practiced on concrete.
The audience was silent—not a bored silence, but a captivated one.
In the wings, Grace watched, tears streaming down her face. She saw the girl who had practiced in the kitchen. She saw the girl who had endured the bleach, the insults, and the poverty. She saw her daughter winning.

When the final note hung in the air and Emily bowed, the silence lasted for three seconds.
Then the auditorium erupted. It was a standing ovation. People weren't just clapping; they were cheering, shouting her name.
