Chapter 3 - The Broken Pointe

The Winter Gala was three weeks away. It was the most important night of the academy’s calendar—the night when scouts from major ballet companies came to watch. It was the night where reputations were made or destroyed.
Eleanor had cast Emily as the lead in the modern piece. It was a role that required raw emotion, the exact thing Emily excelled at.
One evening, after an grueling rehearsal, Emily went to her locker to retrieve her pointe shoes. She reached inside, but her fingers encountered something wet. She pulled her shoes out and gasped. The satin, the ribbons, the delicate inner lining—all had been soaked in heavy, industrial-strength bleach.
She grabbed her dance bag, but it was worse. Her leotards had been shredded with a razor. Her makeup kit was smashed.
The locker room door opened. Vanessa walked in, casually applying lip gloss in the mirror. She glanced at the ruined mess in Emily's hands and feigned surprise.
"Oh, goodness," Vanessa chirped. "Looks like you had an accident. Too bad. You can't perform barefoot, can you? And I don't think your... benefactor... can get you new shoes in time for tomorrow’s dress rehearsal."
Emily didn't cry. She felt a cold, hard resolve settle in her marrow. She realized then that this wasn't about ballet. This was a war.
She walked straight to Charles Whitmore’s office. She didn't knock. She walked in, her damp, ruined shoes in her hand, and placed them on his desk.

"Someone destroyed my gear, Mr. Whitmore," Emily said, her voice steady. "I have no idea who, and I have no proof. But I don't need a new pair of shoes. I need a chance to prove that despite this, I will be ready for the gala."
Charles looked at the shoes, then at Emily. His expression softened. "I will handle the investigation. But Emily, you need to understand—this world is ruthless. If you want to survive, you have to be smarter than them."
