Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Raldi Syndicate

The ride out of the city was executed with the terrifying efficiency of a military operation.

Within fifteen minutes of Sylvio’s phone call, two dark SUVs with blacked-out glass idled in the subterranean loading bay of the Hotel Virgini. Megan had been wrapped in Sylvio’s heavy cashmere overcoat—a garment so large on her frail frame that it dragged along the concrete floor like a dark cape. He had refused to let her walk through the service corridors, carrying her in his arms despite her weak protests, shielding her face against his chest as they moved past security cameras and tight-lipped enforcers.

Now, she sat in the leather interior of the lead SUV, staring out the tinted window as the glittering skyline of the city receded into the dark expanse of the pine forests. Beside her, Sylvio sat silently, typing commands into an encrypted laptop tablet. His right hand, however, never broke contact with hers. His fingers were locked firmly around her thin hand, resting on the seat between them like a permanent anchor.

"Drink this," Sylvio commanded quietly, setting the tablet aside and handing her a thermos of warm, rich broth that Dante—his loyal second-in-command—had provided.

Megan looked at the thermos, her stomach betraying her with a loud, hollow growl. She blushed furiously, pulling the cashmere coat tighter around her shoulders.

"Don't be ashamed of being hungry," Sylvio said softly, his voice devoid of any judgment. "Eat, Megan. Please."

She took the thermos with trembling hands and took a cautious sip. The savory liquid hit her starved stomach like an elixir, warmth spreading through her limbs. She drank greedily, tears silently spilling over her eyelashes and dripping into the broth. She hadn't eaten a hot meal in three days; her last sustenance had been a half-eaten sleeve of stale crackers from the staff breakroom.

Sylvio watched her eat, his hand tightening around hers until his knuckles turned white. Every swallow she took was a knife to his pride, a agonizing reminder of how completely he had failed to protect the woman he loved.

"Where are we going?" she asked hoarsely, setting the empty thermos down.

"To the estate in Lake Forest," Sylvio replied. "It's fortified. Perimeter sensors, fifty armed men, anti-surveillance sweeps every two hours. You'll be safe there."

"I don't need a fortress, Sylvio," she said, turning her head to meet his gaze. "I need my life back. My apartment—"

"Your apartment was a rat-infested tenement in the South District," Dante spoke up from the front passenger seat, turning around with a tablet in hand. "Forgive me, Signora Raldi, but I ran a background check on your landlord while you were in the elevator. A man named Arthur Vance. He has been charging you three times the legal rent cap, turning off your heating in winter, and sending his collectors to intimidate you."

Megan shrank back into the leather seat. "He... he was going to evict me this week."

Sylvio’s jaw set into an ominous line. He looked at Dante. "Where is Mr. Vance right now?"

"My boys picked him up twenty minutes ago, Boss," Dante replied coolly. "He is currently sitting in a holding cellar in our Westside warehouse, reflecting on his business practices. He has already signed over the deed of the building to a housing charity, waived all back rent for every tenant, and is currently weeping into a bucket."

"Good," Sylvio said flatly. "Ensure he never operates a business in this state again."

"Sylvio!" Megan gasped, shocked by the casual cruelty of his justice. "You can't just kidnap people!"

"I can, and I did," Sylvio said, turning his body toward her, leaning in until his shadow fell over her face. "He preyed on you because he thought you were helpless. He thought you had no one in your corner. He was wrong. Anyone who made your life a misery over the last four years will pay for every tear you shed, Megan. Starting with him, and ending with whoever forced you out of my home."

The SUV pulled through massive wrought-iron gates, traveling down a winding cobblestone driveway lined with towering oak trees before coming to a halt in front of a sprawling Italianate mansion. The Raldi estate.

Megan felt a sudden wave of vertigo. Four years ago, she had walked out of this very house under the cover of a thunderstorm, leaving behind her clothes, her jewelry, and her heart. Returning now felt like stepping back into a dream—or a trap.

The vehicle door opened, and Sylvio stepped out first, extending his hand to her. "Welcome home, Megan."

She hesitated, looking at his open palm. "Sylvio... the divorce. It was finalized four years ago. The papers were filed."

Sylvio’s eyes narrowed into dark slits. A cold, dangerous smile spread across his face—a smile that held no warmth whatsoever.

"Ah, yes. The divorce papers," Sylvio said softly, stepping closer and lifting her out of the vehicle in one effortless movement. "I'm glad you brought that up. You see, Megan... after you left, I had those papers analyzed by my forensic team. The signature on the final decree wasn't yours. It was a forgery."

May you like

Megan froze in his arms. "What?"

"I never signed them either," Sylvio whispered into her ear as he carried her up the grand stone steps of the mansion. "In the eyes of the law, and in the eyes of God, you never stopped being my wife. The divorce was a lie, Megan. Just like whatever reason you had for running away."
