Chapter 3 - Unraveling the Deception

The master suite of the Raldi estate had not changed.

The vaulted ceilings, the silk-draped canopy bed, the grand marble fireplace crackling with a fresh fire—everything was exactly as Megan had left it four years ago. Even the perfume bottle she had left on the vanity sat in the exact same spot, its crystal cap catching the warm amber light of the hearth.

Dr. Rossi, a trusted family physician who had treated the Raldi family for decades, finished removing the IV line from Megan's arm. She sat on the edge of the massive feather bed, wearing a soft silk robe that Sylvio’s staff had placed in her dressing room. Her skin looked slightly less translucent, fueled by the fluids and nutrients the doctor had administered, but her spirit remained visibly bruised.

"Her vitals are stabilizing, Don Sylvio," Dr. Rossi said, packing his medical kit and speaking to Sylvio, who stood near the fireplace with a glass of untouched whiskey in his hand. "Severe malnutrition, systemic exhaustion, and mild nerve inflammation from prolonged physical labor. I’ve prescribed high-potency vitamin infusions and mandatory bed rest for at least two weeks. No stress. No physical exertion."

"Thank you, Doctor," Sylvio said quietly. "Dante will escort you out."

Once the heavy oak door closed behind the physician, the silence returned to the master bedroom.

Sylvio set his glass down on the mantelpiece. He didn't approach the bed immediately; instead, he stood near the fire, his hands thrust deep into his trouser pockets, watching her through the dim light.

"Four years ago," Sylvio began, his voice flat and devoid of emotion, "I came home from a meeting in New York to find our bedroom empty. My uncle, Vincenzo, was sitting downstairs in the study. He handed me a manila envelope. Inside was a signed confession from your personal account manager, claiming you had taken two million dollars from our offshore reserve and fled to Europe with a lover."

Megan’s breath hitched in her throat. She looked up at him, her eyes wide with shock. "What?! A lover? Sylvio, I never—"

"I didn't believe him," Sylvio interrupted, raising a hand to cut her off. "I shot the account manager in the knees ten minutes later. Under interrogation, he admitted he was paid to lie. But when I searched for you, every trail was cold. The police found your car abandoned near the river. Vincenzo swore you were dead—that rival families had snatched you to break me."

He slowly walked toward the bed, stopping right at the edge. He knelt down on one knee, bringing his eye level down to hers. The vulnerability in his dark eyes was terrifying to behold.

"For four years, Megan, I lived in a hell of my own making," he whispered, his voice trembling slightly. "I thought you were dead. Then I thought you hated me. I buried myself in blood and business because without you, this entire empire felt like a pile of ashes."

He reached out, taking both of her frail hands in his. "Now tell me the truth. What happened the night you left?"

Tears blurred Megan's vision. The dam she had maintained for four long, lonely years finally burst. She couldn't hold it inside anymore. The weight of the secret had nearly killed her, and looking into Sylvio’s eyes, she knew she couldn't lie to him again.

"It was Uncle Vincenzo," she sobbed, her body shaking with violent tremors.

Sylvio’s hands went completely still. "Vincenzo?"

"The night before you went to New York," Megan wept, her words pouring out in a frantic, desperate rush. "Vincenzo came to this room while you were at the docks. He had four armed men with him. He... he showed me a live video feed on his tablet."

She gripped Sylvio’s hands tightly, her fingers digging into his skin. "It was a video of you, Sylvio! You were sitting in your car outside the warehouse. There were three sniper red dots trained straight on your head and chest! Vincenzo told me that if I didn't sign the transfer documents giving him control of the family's shipping contracts, and if I didn't vanish forever without telling you... he would order his men to pull the triggers right then!"

Sylvio felt the world tilt on its axis. His chest locked up, the air in his lungs turning to liquid fire. "He... he threatened my life to force you out?"

"He told me that if I ever tried to contact you, or if I used your money, he would know," Megan cried, burying her face in his hands. "He said he had eyes on you twenty-four hours a day. He said your life depended on my invisibility! I had to leave, Sylvio! I had to let you think I was dead or horrible! I couldn't risk them hurting you!"

A horrifying, sickening realization crashed over Sylvio Raldi.

She hadn't abandoned him because she was weak. She hadn't left because she didn't love him. She had walked into a living hell of poverty, starvation, and humiliation, sacrificing her entire existence, her health, and her dignity—all to keep a gun off his chest.

Sylvio pulled her into his arms. He gathered her thin, fragile body against his massive chest, burying his face in the crook of her neck. A ragged, agonizing sound tore out of his throat as he held her, his shoulders shaking with silent, deep-seated sobs.

"God... oh God, Megan," he choked out, his arms tightening around her as if trying to fuse her back into his soul. "You suffered... you starved for me..."

"I couldn't let them kill you," she whispered into his shoulder, her hands clutching his shirt. "You were my whole world, Sylvio. You still are."

Sylvio pulled back slightly, framing her face with his large hands. His eyes were no longer just dark; they were consumed by a terrifying, murderous fury that burned hotter than the sun. The grief had transformed instantly into absolute, unadulterated vengeance.

"Vincenzo stole four years of our lives," Sylvio said, his voice dropping into a deadly, razor-sharp whisper that chilled the air in the room. "He made my wife sweep floors and starve in the cold."

He kissed her forehead gently, reverently, lingering against her skin before standing up.

"He thinks he won," Sylvio said, adjusting the cuffs of his shirt. "He thinks he controls the family council. He has a meeting with the syndicate heads tomorrow evening at the Grand Astoria. He plans to officially claim my seat as Don."

Megan looked up at him, fear spiking in her chest. "Sylvio, what are you going to do?"

Sylvio looked down at her, a dark, triumphant smile touching his lips. "I am going to let him host his party, Megan. And then, I am going to show him what happens when a ghost comes back to collect a debt."
