Chapter 4 - The Prey and the Predator

The news of Megan’s return sent shockwaves through the hidden channels of the city’s criminal underworld, though Sylvio kept her physical location under absolute lockdown.

By the following morning, the Raldi estate had transformed into an impenetrable command bunker. Over a hundred elite guards lined the perimeter; encrypted jamming devices rendered cell signals useless within a three-mile radius, and Dante sat in the estate's security center, monitoring every entry point in the state.

Inside the master bedroom, Megan was undergoing a transformation of her own.

Two high-end stylists and a private tailor—sworn to absolute secrecy by Dante—had been brought to the estate under armed guard. They laid out racks of exquisite evening gowns, velvet cloaks, and cases of sparkling diamond jewelry across the room.

Megan stood before the full-length mirror, staring at her reflection.

The hollow-cheeked maid in the gray canvas uniform was gone. In her place stood a queen reclaimed. She wore a deep emerald velvet gown with a plunging neckline and long, fitted sleeves that concealed the faint IV bruise on her arm. The rich fabric hugged her waist, highlighting the gentle return of her curves after twenty-four hours of intensive nutrition. Her hair had been styled into glamourous, dark waves that swept over one shoulder, and around her throat sat the Raldi Emerald—a seventy-carat heirloom necklace that had belonged to the matriarchs of the family for three generations.

The door opened, and Sylvio walked into the dressing room.

He wore a tailored black tuxedo, his white shirt crisp against his dark complexion. When his eyes landed on Megan, he stopped dead in his tracks. The raw admiration in his gaze made Megan’s breath catch.

"You look..." Sylvio’s voice trailed off. He walked up behind her, placing his hands gently on her waist, looking at their joint reflection in the glass. "You look radiant, my queen."

"I feel like an imposter," Megan admitted softly, leaning back against his solid chest. "Yesterday I was scrubbing floors for minimum wage. Tonight I'm wearing a fortune around my neck."

"You were never an imposter," Sylvio said fiercely, kissing the sensitive spot beneath her ear. "The floor-scrubbing was an aberration. This—this power, this grace—this is who you are. This is who you were born to be beside me."

"Are you sure about tonight?" she asked, turning in his arms to look up at him. "Uncle Vincenzo won't come quietly. He has the backing of Matteo Moretti and the Andrangetta syndicate."

Sylvio’s jaw hardened. "Moretti is a parasite who thought he could use my uncle to carve up my territory. He doesn't know you're alive. Neither does Vincenzo. They think I'm still grieving, still unstable."

He reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a small, exquisite silver object. It was a compact, pearl-handled 9mm pistol—light, elegant, and lethal. He placed it gently into Megan’s silk clutch purse.

"Just in case," Sylvio whispered. "I will never let anyone back you into a corner again, Megan. Never."

"I won't need to use it," Megan said, her eyes flashing with a new, dangerous resolve forged by four years of suffering. "Because I know you won't let them leave that room alive."

Sylvio let out a low, dark laugh, captivated by the fire in her eyes. "God, I missed you," he murmured, pulling her in for a deep, intoxicating kiss that tasted of promise and retribution. "Let's go take back our kingdom."

At 8:30 PM, the grand ballroom of the Grand Astoria Hotel was packed with over two hundred high-ranking members of the regional syndicates. Crystal chandeliers illuminated tables laden with caviar, expensive champagne, and mahogany boxes of Cuban cigars.

At the center head table sat Uncle Vincenzo Raldi—a fat, arrogant man in his late fifties with slicked-back hair and a gold watch that sparkled under the lights. Beside him sat Matteo Moretti, the ruthless Don of the rival Moretti syndicate.

Vincenzo raised his glass, tapping it with a silver spoon to command the room’s attention.

"My esteemed brothers!" Vincenzo announced loudly, his voice echoing over the quieted crowd. "For four years, our family has suffered under the erratic leadership of my nephew, Sylvio! He has allowed his grief over his late wife to weaken our borders! But tonight, with the support of Don Moretti, I formally declare myself the new Head of the Raldi Syndicate!"

A few corrupt lieutenants clapped, while the older, loyal capos sat in stony, tense silence.

"A touch premature, don't you think, Uncle?" a voice echoed from the grand entrance balcony.

The room went dead, suffocatingly quiet.

Vincenzo froze, his champagne glass hovering mid-air.

Standing at the top of the marble staircase stood Sylvio Raldi. He looked towering, commanding, and utterly devoid of mercy.

And on his arm, holding her head high, her emerald dress sweeping over the marble steps, was Megan.

Gasps of utter disbelief erupted across the ballroom. Capos stood up from their chairs; glasses shattered on the floor.

Vincenzo’s face turned the color of curdled milk. His eyes bulged out of his head as he stared at the woman he had threatened, starved, and declared dead four years ago.

"Impossible..." Vincenzo stammered, his body trembling violently. "She... she was... you're dead!"

"I was never dead, Vincenzo," Megan’s clear, powerful voice rang across the grand ballroom, cutting through the silence like a diamond blade. "I was just waiting for my husband to come fetch me."
