Chapter 3 - The Master’s Study

The ride back to Boston took less than an hour, but it felt like a descent into another world. We didn't pull up to my father’s estate or a dingy waterfront warehouse. Instead, the Mercedes glided through the wrought-iron gates of a secluded coastal compound in Gloucester—a sprawling stone estate perched directly on the crashing cliffs of the Atlantic.

When the heavy oak doors opened, I was led into a massive study lined with floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves and a roaring stone fireplace. Gabriel Voss sat behind a large oak desk, wearing a charcoal suit without a tie, his dark hair slightly tousled, looking every bit the cold industrialist the newspapers described.

He didn't stand up immediately. He poured two fingers of amber whiskey into a crystal glass, swirling the liquid slowly before looking up at me with sharp, intelligent grey eyes.

“You cut a very expensive dress, Claire,” Gabriel said softly, his voice carrying an amused, low rumble. “And you left a two-carat diamond on the vanity. Poor financial management for a supply-chain expert.”

“I left because I don't belong to you, Gabriel,” I said, my voice steady despite my racing pulse. “And I stayed gone because I spent the last three weeks digging through your offshore accounts. I know what Vane Maritime was being used for.”

Gabriel took a slow sip of his whiskey, setting the glass down with a soft click. He leaned back in his leather chair, studying me not with anger, but with a terrifying, profound fascination.

“Did you really think your father’s debt was real?” Gabriel asked quietly.

The question hit me like a physical blow. I froze.

“Explain,” I demanded.

“Your father is a gambling addict who lost control of his company a decade ago,” Gabriel said smoothly, standing up and walking slowly toward me across the Persian rug. “When he came to me begging for a bail-out, he offered you as payment. He thought it was a brilliant transaction. But I didn't want a hostage, Claire. I wanted a partner who understood the logistics of my empire better than my own board members. I let you climb out that window because I wanted to see if you had the spine to survive outside the cage he built for you. And look at you now—you didn't run away to hide; you spent three weeks hacking into my restricted servers.”

He stopped just a few feet away from me. He was taller than I remembered, his presence overwhelming the room.

“You’re not my prisoner, Claire,” Gabriel whispered, his gaze intense. “You’re the only person in this city who managed to outmaneuver me. Now, are we going to finish tearing my empire apart from the outside, or are you going to sit down and help me destroy your father legally?”
