Chapter 4 - The Alliance of Shadows

The fire crackled loudly in the massive hearth as I stared up at Gabriel Voss, my mind racing through every implication of his words. He hadn't bought me; he had tested me. And my father—the man who had raised me, the man I had spent four years protecting by fixing crooked ledgers—had willingly sold me off twice: first to save his company, and then to secure his own luxury.
“If I sit at this desk,” I said slowly, my fingers digging into the fabric of my sweater pockets where the flash drive rested, “my father loses everything. His company, his estate, his social standing. Everything.”
“Your father is a thief and a fraud,” Gabriel replied, his tone devoid of any emotion other than absolute coldness. “He stole your inheritance, your youth, and your freedom. He deserves to lose every brick of that estate.”
“I don't just want him to lose his house, Gabriel,” I said, a dangerous calm settling over my voice. “I want a complete forensic audit of Vane Maritime published publicly. I want every asset transferred back to a legitimate holding company under my sole control. And I want my father and Richard’s associates legally barred from the shipping industry forever.”
Gabriel looked at me for a long, silent moment. Then, slowly, a genuine smile touched the corners of his mouth—not the polite, terrifying mask he wore at public events, but something sharper, wilder, and entirely respectful.

“Done,” Gabriel said. “Starting tonight, you aren't hiding in a Providence diner. You are sitting at the head of Voss-Vane Logistics as my legal equal. But to pull this off cleanly, we need your father to think he’s winning. We need to let him make one final, fatal miscalculation.”
For the next forty-eight hours, the study became our war room. We mapped out every bank transfer, every hidden maritime lien, and every shell company Richard Vane had set up to siphon money away from the family accounts. I worked side-by-side with Gabriel’s chief financial officers, easily out-analyzing men who had spent decades in the criminal underworld. I realized then why Gabriel had wanted this marriage in the first place: in a world of violence and leverage, absolute financial truth was the ultimate weapon, and I wielded it like a scalpel.
