Chapter 5 - The Downfall at the Gala

The annual Boston Maritime Association Gala was held in the grand ballroom of the Omni Parker House, glittering with crystal chandeliers, champagne towers, and the city’s elite. Richard Vane stood near the entrance, smiling brightly as he accepted handshakes and congratulations on the upcoming "merger" between Vane Maritime and Voss Freight—a merger he believed would finally clear his debts and make him a multi-millionaire once again.

The heavy mahogany doors swung open, and the room went completely silent.

I entered on Gabriel’s arm. I wasn't wearing an oversized sweater or a fifty-pound corset. Instead, I wore a backless emerald-silk gown that caught the chandelier light, my dark hair pinned up with diamond-encrusted pins, my posture straight and unyielding.

My father’s face drained of color. He dropped his champagne flute, the glass shattering against the marble floor with a sharp crack.

“Claire?” Richard stammered, pushing through the crowd as he reached us, his eyes wide with absolute panic. “What is the meaning of this? Where have you been? Gabriel, she ran away—she’s unstable—”

“She never ran away, Richard,” Gabriel cut in, his voice ringing across the silent ballroom with effortless authority. “She was simply taking a brief vacation while I reviewed your financial history.”

I stepped forward, holding a sleek black tablet in my hands. I tapped the screen, and instantly, the massive projection screens behind the stage—normally reserved for celebratory corporate slideshows—lit up with bright, undeniable data: bank statements, forged signatures, offshore wire transfers, and a complete forensic breakdown of every dollar Richard Vane had embezzled, including the fake two-million-dollar debt he had manufactured to sell me.

Murmurs erupted through the crowd. Several prominent businessmen hurriedly backed away from my father as federal investigators, tipped off by our legal team an hour prior, walked calmly through the ballroom doors.

“You... you ruined me,” Richard whispered, his knees buckling as he stared at the giant screen displaying his crimes to the entire city. “I’m your father...”

“You were an employer who treated me like property,” I said softly, looking down at him without a single ounce of pity. “And your ledger is finally balanced.”
