Chapter 6 - A New Empire

The storm outside the Gloucester estate had cleared by morning, leaving behind a crisp, brilliant winter sun that glittered across the freezing Atlantic waves. I stood on the stone balcony of the master suite, wrapped in a heavy cashmere robe, holding a cup of hot black coffee.
The federal case against my father and his associates was moving swiftly, guaranteed by ironclad forensic evidence that left no room for bail or bribery. Vane Maritime had been legally dissolved and absorbed entirely into a newly restructured corporation: Vass-Vane Global, with me holding fifty-one percent of the voting shares.
Heavy footsteps echoed behind me, followed by the familiar warmth of Gabriel’s arms wrapping around my waist from behind. He rested his chin gently on my shoulder, looking out at the endless ocean horizon.
“The board officially ratified the restructuring ten minutes ago,” Gabriel murmured against my ear. “You are officially the most powerful logistics executive in the Northeast, Mrs. Voss.”
I turned slightly within his embrace, leaning back against his chest, feeling the steady, calm rhythm of his heartbeat. The marriage that had started as a prison sentence, an auction of flesh and debt, had somehow transformed into something entirely unexpected: a partnership built on mutual respect, shared ambition, and absolute equality.
“I told you on our wedding night that I didn't belong to you, Gabriel,” I said quietly, a faint smile touching my lips.

“I know,” Gabriel replied, tightening his arms around me just a fraction. “You didn't belong to me then. You had to take the whole empire for yourself first.”
I raised my coffee cup in a silent toast to the crashing waves below, knowing that the girl who had climbed down a freezing iron fire escape three weeks ago was gone forever, replaced by a woman who didn't just escape the mafia boss—she took his seat right beside him.
